Low Energy and Recycled Aggregates

Saving energy is high on the agenda throughout our industry – with use of asphalt being a large element of emissions. Bardon Contracting, in conjunction with Enterprise have carried out recent trials using ‘low energy asphalts’ for surface, binder and base layers. This BS/EN specification is produced in a manner that reduces normal mixture temperatures. The products perform in service as well as their 'hot mix' equivalents and have significant environmental gains through a reduced carbon footprint.

Enterprise, in association with Bardon, now produce fly ash bound mixtures ‘FABM’ which are a mixture of recycled graded coarse aggregate, PFA and lime. This material is used in pavements as a stabilised subbase and the base layer, also ideal for use in utility trench reinstatements.

FABM material offers laying flexibility, immediate stability under traffic, and the development of significant stiffness and strength.
